Afterpay vs PayPal: which slows a Shopify store more?
Afterpay is usually the lighter of the two. On the typical store it was light, while PayPal was heavy.
Both are payment and pay-later apps. We measured Afterpay on 49 Shopify ecommerce stores and PayPal on 26.
Side by side
| App | Typical processing time | Stores measured |
|---|---|---|
| Afterpay | Light (under 100 ms) | 49 |
| PayPal | Heavy (300 ms to 1 second) | 26 |
Afterpay was light on 86% of the stores it was measured on. PayPal was heavy on 73% of the stores it was measured on.
On stores that run both
Only 4 of the stores we checked load both, too few for a fair head-to-head. Stores often pick one of the two.
Each band is an app's typical processing time across the stores it was measured on. Those stores differ from app to app. That makes the result on stores that run both the fairer test. Apps found on fewer than 20 stores aren't listed yet. The list grows as more stores are checked.
